Emotional Burden
We all know plenty of information about the harsh conditions that the Australians troops were forced to face during World 1, but not many understand the emotional hardships for the women left behind. Many women said goodbye to husbands, sons, brothers, friends or fathers and nervously waited for their return or some form of communication from them. During the war, when they didn't have the technology we have today, the most popular form of contact was the letter. However, this was not very trustworthy and many months could pass before the letter reached its destination. That is if it was lucky enough to even arrive without getting lost in the post somewhere along the way. As well as this, the government at the time was censoring newspapers and letters from the war. This left families completely unaware of the realities faced by their loved ones at war. In many cases, the only news received about their family/friends at war is when a telegram is brought to their door bringing news of death.
